ZV series

ZV series small-flow dosing gear pumps

The ZV series is our range of compact self-priming external gear pumps for small flows and volumetric dosing, built in our Bologna factory since 1955. Born to dose fuel and lubricant to Formula 1 engines on the test bench, it doses by motor speed with an inverter, with volumetric efficiency close to 100%. Ten models from 0.47 to 102 l/min, threaded ports, flanged directly to the motor without baseplate.

Why the ZV is a dosing gear pump

The ZV series was developed for a demanding customer: the engine test bench, where petrol and lubricant had to be dosed to Formula 1 engines with repeatable precision. The answer was a positive displacement external gear pump built to the standards of a measuring instrument: gears in hardened and ground alloy steel, machined to tolerances in hundredths of a millimetre, with volumetric efficiency close to 100%.

Because every revolution moves the same volume, flow is proportional to speed. Driving the motor through an inverter turns the pump into a volumetric dosing unit: the flow is set from the control panel, changed in seconds and repeated batch after batch, with no separate flow meter or metering valve. Self-priming and almost free of pulsation, the ZV handles products from thin oils to viscous fluids.

ZV series models and flow rates

Ten sizes cover the small-flow band. Flow in l/min at three reference speeds; with an inverter any intermediate value is available.

Compact construction, flanged to the motor

The ZV has threaded ports and is flanged directly to the motor, with no baseplate and no coupling. The advantages are practical: a compact unit that fits inside a machine or a cabinet, no alignment at installation or after maintenance, and fewer vibrations because there is no coupling to transmit them. The pump is also self-priming, with a constant flow whatever the back pressure.

Fluids handled include oils, water, additives, fuels, solvents, resins, caustic soda, acids, fuel and thermal oils, lubricants, dense naphtha, bitumen, paints, isocyanates and polyols, molasses, chocolate, soaps and fats. Stainless steel executions are available for aggressive products. One limitation: very thin liquids with no lubricating power, such as pure water or light solvents, require dedicated executions, because the gears rely on the fluid for lubrication. ATEX documentation is available.

Applications of ZV dosing gear pumps

  • Dosing of resins, hardeners, isocyanate and polyol in two-component systems, with one ZV per component and the ratio set by speed.
  • Dosing of additives, pigments, emulsifiers and fluxing agents into bitumen emulsion and asphalt plants.
  • Burner feeding, ring mains and additive dosing for fuel oils and diesel.
  • Circulation of thermal oil in small heating loops, including the 8 ZV auxiliary pump of our hot-spot heating circuit.
  • Engine and component test benches, laboratory and pilot plants, filling machines.
  • Fire-fighting foam concentrate, concrete admixtures, glycerine, soaps and cosmetics in stainless steel execution.

In every case the pump is selected on flow, pressure and viscosity, not on the nearest size in the table.

How to request a ZV pump

To size the ZV we need the fluid and its viscosity at the working temperature, the flow in l/min and the accuracy you expect, the discharge pressure, whether the duty is dosing or transfer, the suction conditions and the drive: fixed speed, inverter or servo. Tell us the exact product name for aggressive chemicals, because the material of body, gears and seals is chosen on the chemical.

Frequently asked questions

How do ZV series dosing gear pumps regulate the flow?

By motor speed. Flow is proportional to revolutions, so an inverter on the motor sets the dose from the control panel. Volumetric efficiency close to 100% makes the result repeatable without a separate flow meter.

What is the smallest flow a ZV pump can dose?

The 1 ZV delivers 0.47 l/min at 450 rpm and 1.52 l/min at 1,450 rpm; with an inverter lower speeds give proportionally smaller flows. The largest model, the 70 ZV, reaches 102 l/min.

Does the ZV pump need a baseplate?

No. The ZV is flanged directly to the motor, with threaded ports: a compact unit with no coupling, no alignment and fewer vibrations, easy to fit inside a machine or a cabinet.

Can the ZV pump water or light solvents?

Only in dedicated executions. Very thin liquids with no lubricating power, such as pure water or light solvents, do not lubricate the gears; tell us the fluid and we will propose the right version.

Which fluids are typical for the ZV series?

Oils, fuels, additives, resins, isocyanates and polyols, paints, caustic soda and acids, thermal oil, bitumen, molasses, chocolate, soaps and fats, in cast iron or stainless steel execution.
